Treatment - General. Prednisone and Levaquin drug interaction FYI. Prednisone and Levaquin drug interaction FYI 11 years 8 months ago Okay this is more of a warning than anything. I'm taking Prednisone for 5 days as well as Levaquin, an antibiotic.
My doc warned me that I should not exercise while taking Levaquin, it can cause tendon ruptures. Neither he or my pharmacist told me that the major drug interaction between these two meds is that the Prednisone ups the risk of tendon ruptures, I looked that up after seeing the Levaquin warning label. I'm posting because I realize Prednisone is a long-term platelet treatment I'll never forget that one and if you are prescribed Levaquin in the meantime your regular doc or pharmacist may not put 2 and 2 together especially if you don't get the prescriptions filled at the same time.
On the upside I now have a bonafide excuse for avoiding my New Year's exercise resolution. I just had this happen a few weeks ago. I was given Levaquin and am taking 20 mg's of Prednisone. I got achilles tendonitis in both feet wasn't exercising. I don't think it's going to progress to rupture I was already aware of the warning so when it happened, I knew what was going on. Levaquin is a commonly prescribed antibiotic in a class known as the Quinolone Antibiotics, which are known to be so incredibly toxic that 11 of these antibiotics have already been removed from the market due to dangerous side effects.
You can see a full List of Quinolones here. Among these side effects is a condition called Levaquin Tendonitis or Cipro Tendonitis that can cause problems from mild tendon pain all the way up to deadly conditions such as Aortic Aneurysm.
Problems such as anxiety and panic attacks are common problems related to Levaquin that are usually dismissed as being a psychological problem rather than the true reaction from the drug and it's many interactions. One of the most important Levaquin Drug Interactions that you should be aware of is that between Prednisone and Levaquin- including ALL other steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Prednisone is a 'Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug' that is used in severe cases of inflammation such as occurs in the airways during asthma attacks or in the joints in cases of rheumatoid arthritis. Prednisone also has it's own set of serious Prednisone Side Effects that should make you think twice about taking this drug- especially multiple times or over the long term. Yes, it is important to read the iformation, and in my case called the doctor back because I was clearly one of those considered to be at high risk for adverse events given my age and that I was on prednisone at the time. Unfortunately, the docs are told by the manufacturer reps that the adverse events are so rare, they will never see one in their practice.
